If you’re anything like me, music = life. I can hear a song and immediately be transported to a time in my life whether it was good, bad, or in-between. There’s that song that defined a break-up, or the song you heard the day you got that job you always wanted. Oh- what about that power song that you play on repeat driving to work on a Monday? That one, too.
It’s not different in the gym and working out needs a playlist that keeps us inspired to keep pushing toward our vision. But it can’t be *any* playlist – it has be *your* playlist, amirite!?
Of course when you show up to the gym, you’ve got any number of headphone options (I’ll be honest, I’m still a wired earbuds kind of girl – don’t judge me, just be happy I got rid of my old-ass iPod). And while you can be in your own zone at the Planet Fitnesses of the world, what happens when you show up to spin class and you gotta dance to the beat of someone else’s drum?
I don’t want to mince words: sometimes people’s playlists straight STINK. I’ve been going to spin classes for the better part of a decade and I’ve heard it all. No shade, but I have known people who are clearly fit and have some credentials to teach group fitness – but they can’t craft a playlist to save their lives. And it’s ok – we can’t all be in tune with rhythm – it’s all good, I swear. NEVERTHELESS (I am laughing so hard right now), I have wanted to walk up to the front of the room, unplug their phone from the speaker, and be like “Girl, just let me play this mix because you are LOSING them, honey.”
You’re nodding, aren’t you? I knew I wasn’t alone. I’m putting myself out there because it’s important to talk about how the best spin classes have the BEST playlists!
If you’re flipping through your playlists later on today thinking “Would she read me for this mess?” The answer is no – you do you, boo! But when we’re teaching spin class, we *gotta* be thinking about the tunes as much as we’re thinking about good form! Why, you ask? Because when you walk through those doors, you surrender your earbuds and give yourself over to someone else’s mixtape – and that person needs to make sure their -ish is fresh to death!
So, when you sign up for a class at Rebel Cycle, I want you to know that I’ve got you. I stand behind each playlist and it’s going to tell you a story – it’s going to motivate you. In class, you’re going to build strength and burn hella calories but you might also laugh, clap your hands, and maybe you’ll even cry – but don’t worry, you’ll be sweating so damn much nobody’s gonna notice that you’re sobbing in the back of the room during Ke$ha’s “Praying.”
And the best part? If you want to hear your mix, we’ll have a giant chalkboard in the studio for you to let us know what song you want to hear in your next class. That, or you can hit us up on social media to get your mixtape added to a future class. This is your workout and we can’t wait to cycle with you!
Yours in the rebellion,
